Meyer Engineers & Fleming Construction Make Improvements at New Orleans Fair Grounds

Churchill Downs Inc. recently made wide sweeping improvements to the New Orleans Fair Grounds’ physical facilities, especially infield drainage, and Quality Sitework played a role in the project.

In 2014, leading up to this year’s racing season, Churchill Downs, Inc. spent more than $1 million on the improvements, and outlined exactly how it benefits the track’s turf course, customer service, and objectives.

The majority of the funds — about $725,000 — were allocated to fixing a turf track that has seen several canceled races because of drainage problems in previous years.

Louisiana firms Meyer Engineers, Ltd. and Fleming Construction and  handled the design and construction. QSM supplied drainage materials on the project.

“Fleming called and asked about a large order of PVC pipe for a drainage project at the Fair Grounds,” says Eric Beach, sales manager at QSM. “Not only were we able to accommodate their order, we were able to turn it around very quickly.”

QSM had the first order of pipe delivered in one day. When Fleming called with a second request, QSM — staging from its three south Louisiana storage yards — was able to position pipe onsite in just a few hours. That’s almost 1,300 ft. of PVC pipe ranging from 18-24 inches in diameter delivered with next day and same day service.

The new piping will tie into the existing system to improve drainage at the historic track.

The Fair Grounds kicked off its 143rd season of thoroughbred racing on Friday, November 21st. The meet runs through March 29, 2015.
