Rotolo Consultants (RCI) recently installed 11,000 sq. ft. of TrueGrid paving at a well known section of LSU’s campus in Baton Rouge.
The intersection of Nicholson Dr. and W. Chimes St. serves as one of the main entrances to LSU’s campus. It’s busy year-round, but especially so during football season on game days when it feels as if every spot on campus is being used for tailgating or parking.
Lance Sanders, superintendent with RCI, says “this product is easy to use, and we were able to put it down in a fast amount of time. It’s easy to work with, and you can clearly see what we want to accomplish by placing it in this location — the goal is to protect the oak trees.”
Nicholson is lined with oaks, and the area is a popular game day parking location each Fall during LSU Tiger football games. Heavy foot traffic in this area called for a solution that provides protection for the trees and soil.
“This is a good solution,” Sanders said. “These interlocking pavers form a grid network that we are able to fill with mulch. This way, the pavers provide support to protect root systems and ground surrounding them from excessive foot traffic, and the mulch we used to fill the pavers provides a natural look.”
TrueGrid® is represented by QSM in Louisiana, and QSM supplied RCI with the materials. It is used in situations just like these across the country, and throughout Louisiana.
“We supply this product to architects, landscape architects, landscaping companies, and construction companies,” says Jon Beach, the Baton Rouge / Central Louisiana rep for QSM. “It’s our go to recommendation when people call us and say they have a problem with high levels of foot traffic or a need for a permeable surface that can also be used for protection or for parking.”
TrueGrid® in this case, was specified for use by CARBO Landscape Architecture. CARBO, based in Baton Rouge, serves commercial, municipal and residential customers across the Gulf South.
RCI won the contract to install the TrueGrid as part of an improvements project in the area. Says Sanders, “it was my first time working with the product, and I’d be happy to work with it again. We were able to complete the task in just two days, with two guys on the job — installation with TrueGrid moves pretty quick.”
