PETROMAT Enviro: From Propex GeoSolutions

Geosynthetic interlayers are a critical component in roadway paving projects. These non woven polymer paving fabrics provide a cost-effective pavement moisture barrier and give resistance to reflective cracking, but recyclability has been a concern.
A concern no more: thanks to PETROMAT Enviro from Propex. The Enviro line was introduced in 2019. It’s a polymer-based paving fabric with all the performance characteristics of the original PETROMAT paving system — except to say — it has been engineered to be easily millable and recyclable into new asphalt.
Advantages of this technology over glass-lined interlayers are; the ability to be placed directly onto any milled surface, the high asphalt retention capacity, a thickness that can absorb stress, and a proven ability to minimize fatigue and reflective cracking.
PETROMAT Enviro is easy-to-install and cost-effective as an interlayer solution.
PETROMAT Enviro was developed to address concerns with malleability of typical interlayer fabrics. It was specifically designed to be milled into small pieces that eliminate reprocessing concerns for use in asphalt design mixes.
When compared with standard M288 Type II paving fabric, using hot melt asphalt, Enviro pieces range in size from 0.75 inches or smaller when roadway surfaces with heavy traffic were milled vs. 0.75 to more than 4 inches in length on a typical M288 Type II fabric.
This means PETROMAT Enviro mills into pieces small enough that RAP may be used in new asphalt concrete without clogging or additional processing.
In fact, as part of the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) recycled materials policy, the FHWA actively promotes asphalt pavement recycling and technology and recognizes that using recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) can have the greatest economic, environmental, and engineering impact in pavement recycling.
PETROMAT Enviro was easily screened with no slow-down in processing efficiencies, and the product offers 360 degrees of strength and stress absorption.
The product won the Industrial Fabrics Foundation (IFF) Innovation award in 2019. “Innovation is what drives us,” said Mike Gorey, CEO of Propex. “It’s a key part of our culture, and we will continue to develop products that offer the best geosynthetic solutions.”
Once milled, PETROMAT Enviro is nearly indistinguishable in recycled asphalt. On top of that — it’s environmentally safe, and can go through the plant and burn right back into the asphalt.
PETROMAT is manufactured in the United States. Enviro is based on the original PETROMAT design, which has come to be known as the most trusted asphalt paving fabric on the market.
