Flood control is an important part of infrastructure management, and it’s a vital necessity to residents and businesses in South Louisiana. That’s why St. Charles Parish allocated more than $15 million in funding to flood protection projects in Paradis.
QSM supplied two large slide gates on a portion of these projects.
The slide gates — each 10 feet by 10 feet — were manufactured by Waterman, are controlled by electric actuators, and have a total travel distance of 22 feet.
QSM’s role in the project was central to the Paradis Canal Gate construction, since those slide gates are a key feature.Of the $15 million, $5 million was allocated for the Paradis Canal Gate project, with the other $10 million dedicated to the Magnolia Ridge Drainage Pump State. Combined, these two projects represent major improvements in West Bank hurricane levee and flood protection for the parish.
The station provides flood protection to residents within the Magnolia Ridge watershed area, which includes more than 40 businesses, two public buildings, 25 public service buildings — including schools, and many medical facilities and churches.
The pump station project was funded by the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, and in part, by the parish’s general fund, the Paradis Canal Gate project was funded by the CPRA-Restore Act, with Spill Impact Component Matching funds. The Department of the Treasury, Delta Regional Authority, and the State Economic Development Assistance Program were also contributing entities.
At Paradis, the project features an installation of a new motorized vertical lift gated system, a sheet wall which ties into the existing Magnolia Ridge and Sunset levee system, and cage ladders for access and operation of the gates.
TJ Truxillo, QSM’s VP of Environmental, said, “Having grown up in South Louisiana, I understand the value in building and maintaining critical flood control infrastructure. It was my pleasure to be able to contribute to a project of this magnitude in St. Charles Parish.
