The LSU University Medical Center (UMC) construction project in New Orleans is a job site that almost everyone who lives and works in New Orleans can say they’ve seen. It’s a massive job, calling for thousands of personnel, working in all aspects of the construction industry, to build a new complex in Mid City, New Orleans.
Heading up the site prep and utilities installation is Beverly Construction, of Bridge City, LA. Beverly is a sub constructor to the GC on the job, the mammoth Swedish firm, Skanska.
UMC’s job site consists of 34 acres bound by Canal Street, South Galvez, Tulane Avenue and South Claiborne Avenue. The facility will be the focal point of a new vision for the New Orleans economy — a biomedical district designed to attract the world’s top researchers and medical professionals who will work together to deliver world-class healthcare and top tier research within the rubric of a Level One trauma center.
Beverly started its work at UMC in the Fall of 2011. They began by removing more than 70,000 cubic yards of soil, and proceeded to fill the space in with 9 ft. of sand and compact strata to serve as a foundation beneath the designed construction.
Drainage work on the project began in 2012, and Beverly is still on site today, now tending to other areas of the design. Construction is expected to wrap later this year, with occupancy of the buildings scheduled for the early part of 2015.
Brian Kilgen, Sr. Project Manager at Beverly, says, “we’ll be on this job site until it winds down. It’s been a large project for us, but I think it is going well, I think we’ve worked very well with the GC and with our suppliers, and that we’ve all learned a lot.”
Total estimated cost of UMC’s construction is $1.2 billion. Says Kilgen, “it is really good to be a part of something this vast.”
Kilgen says working on site every day, he was able to see there was a shared vision between Skanska, Beverly and QSM. “You could tell from they way we interact that we all have common goals, interests and good communication.” He says communication is key to keeping a project on time, and to “help move things along in the schedule.”
“With QSM, I like the way they’re always on top of our requests,” said Kilgen. “I like the ability to order what we need, when we need it. They really make it easy to work with them from the perspective of scheduling work. Everything comes in as ordered. Nothing is damaged. It’s just a great help for us to have a company like QSM provide us with solid customer service.”
In this job, there were more than 170 storm drain structures, nearly 30 sewer structures, and a few miles of pipe (A2000 PVC and RCP). Beverly used a GPS system to rover and do horizontal and vertical layout for all the site utilities — the first time they’ve deployed this sort of system on a job of this scale.
Beverly is a site prep and utilities contractors located in Bridge City, LA. The company focuses on providing high quality sitework on projects in Metro New Orleans, and throughout South Louisiana.
