Costco Eyes Opening Date with help from Durr & QSM

When Costco purchased the old Coca-Cola Bottling site at Airline Highway and Interstate 12 in Baton Rouge, it confirmed the company’s plans to open its second Louisiana location.

T.D. Farrell Construction, a general contractor that has worked with Costo on many projects across the country knew they had another big project on their hands, but with qualified subs, and responsive vendors such as Durr Heavy Construction and QSM, they knew the project would run smoothly, and Costco would soon be opening a new location.

T.D. Farrell also built the New Orleans Costco, and Durr provided site prep work at that store, too.

Durr Heavy Construction is no stranger to the South Louisiana landscape.

“This is a big project, no doubt,” says Jerry Conrad, Assistant Project Manager with Durr on the Costco job. “But, it’s nothing we can’t handle, and we’re really showing all of our potential here because the project calls for us to perform demo, site prep, utility work, drainage, paving and some roadway construction.”

When complete, the 28-acre site will feature a 150,000-square-foot retail warehouse, a Costco gas station, the re-alignment of Dawndale Ave., a new intersection at Dawndale and Airline Hwy., and newly paved access roads.

Durr provided site prep from start to finish.

“This is a complex job in terms of drainage,” says Conrad. “We’ve got just about everything you can imagine out here, and all of it was supplied by Quality Sitework Materials.”

QSM worked with Conrad and Durr’s Chief Project Manager Robert Wooderson to design and deliver a list of materials custom fit for this site. Drainage and site prep materials included:

  • Precast catch basins
  • Precast sewer manholes
  • Precast grease traps
  • Reinforced concrete pipe
  • Precast headwalls
  • A-2000 PVC & Fittings
  • Castings

“I can’t say enough good things about QSM,” says Conrad. “We threw a lot at them in a short time frame, and they got it all done. They helped us with planning and logistics. It really is a massive amount of material going into this location.

“We’ve got drainage running all over the place, we’ve installed two headwalls that were particularly complex, a biodetention pond, and we’re tying into the municipal system,” said Conrad.

In April, 2014, when the project is complete, QSM will have delivered A-2000 PVC in every size made, more than 30 precast boxes, and a variety of concrete pipes, drains, grates and fittings.
