Applications

Excelsior Blower Systems provides air blowers and vacuum products for a wide range of applications and processes.

Positive Displacement Blowers are used in many applications related to Water and Wastewater Treatment including the following:

Suspended Growth:

Aeration Zones, Re-aeration Zones, Post Aeration Zones in many of your suspended growth biological processes such as Activated Sludge, Extended Aeration, Sequence Batch Reactors (SBR), Membrane Bioreactors (MBR), and occasionally in Oxidation Ditches, and Aerated Lagoons.

Attached Growth:

Process Air, Supplemental Air or Air Scour in many of your attached growth biological processes such as Submerged Fixed Film, Submerged Packed Bed Biofilm Reactors, Fixed Bed Bioreactors, and occasionally Trickling Bed Reactors.

Hybrid/Combined Growth:

Process Air, Supplemental Air and Air Scour in almost every type of combined growth system in the marketplace today including: Moving Bed Bioreactors (MBBR), Suspended Carrier Reactors (SCR), Suspended Carrier Biofilm Reactor (SCBR), Air Lift Reactor (ALR), Biofilm Air-Lift Suspension Reactor (BALSR), Fluidized Aerobic Bio-Reactor (FAB), Sequencing Batch Bio Reactor (SBBR), Expanded Bed Biofilm Reactor (EBBR) or Biofilter (EBBF), Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS), Fluidized Bed Biofilm Reactor (FBBR), Inverse Fluidized Bed Biofilm Reactor (IFBBR), Integrated Fixed FIlm Activated Sludge (IFAS), Submerged Aerobic Fixed Film (SAFF), Biological Aerated Filter (BAF), Submerged Aerated Filter (SAF), Trickling Filter Solids Contact, Biofilter Activated Sludge, Trickling Filter Activated Sludge, and many other combinations of currently available biological processes.

Excelsior Blowers are utilized for more than process air and air scour, and can also be seen providing air for Digester sludge (re)aeration and mixing, Equalization Tank mixing, Grit Chamber aeration, Dissolved Air Flotation aeration, Methane and Biogas Removal, and in Compressed Gas Mixing and Aeration Combination Systems.

Other industries of focus include Aerospace, Agriculture, Aquaculture, Automotive, Electronics, Environmental, Food & Beverage, General Manufacturing, Glass, Iron & Steel, Marine, Medical, Mining & Construction, Oil & Gas, Packaging, Paper & Printing, Pharmaceutical, Plastics, Power Generation, Surface Cleaning, Textiles, Transportation, Wastewater, and Woodworking.

Excelsior: Positive Displacement Blowers

Industrial Positive Displacement Blowers, oftentimes called “PD Blowers”, are utilized to move air through a wide variety of industrial and municipal plant applications.

The selection of positive displacement blowers built by Gardner Denver is second-to-none, and includes:

• Straight Bi-Lobe Blowers

• Straight Tri-Lobe Blowers

• Helical Twisted or Hybrid Tri-Lobe Blowers

• 2×4 Screw Blowers

• 3×5 Screw Blowers

• 3×5 Variable Helix Screw Blowers

No matter if your job calls for individual blowers or blower packages, QSM has the technology to suit your needs thanks to Excelsior and Gardner Denver.

From the legendary Sutorbilt name to the rugged and reliable Duroflow, and all the way up to the superior Cycloblower High Efficiency, Gardner Denver products are tops in the industry.

Types of Positive Displacement Blowers

The types of positive displacement blowers offered by Excelsior may differ in construction, but all are designed to assist with the movement of materials. PD blowers trap and then discharge air to propel materials through pipe or hose which makes bulk transport a quicker and more efficient operation.

Straight Bi-Lobe Blowers: employ two figure eight rotors (or lobes) that rotate

Straight Tri-Lobe Blowers: utilizes straight rotors with three lobe design, less noisy and lower pulsation compared to bi-lobe

Twisted Tri-Lobe Blowers: has helical tri-lobe rotors, smoother pulse with thicker shafts to extend the life of the bearings

2×4 Screw Blowers: legacy screw design for gas operation

3x5 Screw Blowers: new screw design for applications with pressures up to 36 PSIG

3×5 Variable Helix Screw Blowers: GD proprietary design utilizing a variable Helix design that maintains efficiency across entire RPM range

Blower Packages: Plug and play simplifies installation and enclosures cuts down on noise levels

Blower and Vacuum Applications in Wastewater Treatment

Aeration – Aeration Zones, Reaeration Zones, Post Aeration Zones.  Most Wastewater Treatment Plant biological processes utilized the need for oxygen provided by supplemental air in some form or fashion.

Air Lift – A type of pump. This device consists of a vertical riser pipe in the wastewater or sludge to be pumped. Compressed air is injected into a tall piece at the bottom of the pipe. Fine air bubbles mix with the wastewater or sludge to form a mixture lighter than the surrounding water which causes the mixture to rise in the discharge pipe to the outlet. An air-lift pump works like the center of a stand in a percolator coffee pot.

Air Scour – Similar to backwashing, Air Scour is the process of injecting compressed air into a process for the purpose of removing debris that may be blocking the flow of water.

Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) – is a water treatment process that clarifies wastewaters (or other waters) by the removal of suspended matter such as oil or solids. The removal is achieved by dissolving air in the water or wastewater under pressure and then releasing the air at atmospheric pressure in a flotation tank basin. The released air forms tiny bubbles which adhere to the suspended matter causing the suspended matter to float to the surface of the water where it may then be removed by a skimming device.

Digester – Mixing, Thickening or even Methane or Biogas removal, PD blowers are used in amultitude of digester applications whether the digester is aerobic or anaerobic in design.

Lagoon – Aeration can be supplied by natural means, surface aeration, or the process can be sped up utilizing the benefits of supplemental air provide by an external source, ie. PD blowers.

Methane or Biogas Removal – Methane or Biogas removal from capped digesters or various reactors through means of vacuum systems.

Mixing – Mixing requirements can vary depending on the application.  Equalization Tanks, Grit Chambers, and Sludge Holding Tanks are your most common applications requiring air from PD Blowers for mixing purposes.

Vacuum Truck – Blowers mounted on trucks for the purposes of removal and transportation of wastewater/sewage.
