On a day where temperatures climbed above 100 degrees, and the heat index made it feel like 112, friends, fans, players, coaches, professors and university administrators all kept their cool while they had fun, and took part in Nicholls State University’s 6th Annual HUDDLE UP! event.

HUDDLE UP! was organized to create a platform of support for Nicholls Football, and a team from QSM was in that number on August 19, 2023 to participate in the event. QSM is a proud supporter of Nicholls State University, and of NSU Athletics.

Helen and Josh Loeske, Steven Gros, and TJ Truxillo came together to represent QSM in support of NSU, and took part in the festivities by cooking a large pan of paella. Team QSM added chicken, pork, rabbit, shrimp and clams to its dish, and it was a big hit with everyone who had some.

Dave Robichaux, of Low Land Construction, also lent the QSM team a hand.

HUDDLE UP!, and other events throughout the year at NSU are an opportunity for us at QSM to support the many good things Nicholls does for this city, and region,” says Gros. “I’m a graduate of this university, and I’m proud to remain connected with the school through organizations such as the Colonel Athletic Association, and events like HUDDLE UP!”

The initial concept for HUDDLE UP! was to provide an avenue for former Colonels to reunite and inspire a sense of pride and tradition into the football program. With the encouragement of former players, HUDDLE UP! ventured into the fundraising arena with the hope of providing much needed financial assistance for Nicholls Football, and … as a result of the overwhelming support — former players, coaches, alumni and the entire Thibodaux community, have helped establish HUDDLE UP!  as the organization to benefit Nicholls Football.

Says Matt Porche, D.C., and HUDDLE UP! Club President, “We have multiple fundraising events/avenues but the HUDDLE UP! on the 50 5k and Tailgate Cook Off is our signature event which includes a 5k race that ends on the 50 yard line followed by a finish fest where cook-off teams compete.”

“Runners and attendees can enjoy listening to music and trying all the food being cooked by the teams, and the teams are made up from members of local businesses, such as QSM, alumni friends, faculty, and staff. The event is capped off by a live Nicholls Football scrimmage that everyone is welcome to stay and watch.”

Porche is from Houma, and even though he attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, he returned to the area to start his chiropractic practice in Thibodaux in 2005.

When asked why he is a part of HUDDLE UP! Porche says: “I recognized immediately after moving to Thibodaux how important Nicholls is to this community so I try to support them in the best ways that I can. Our core membership — and companies such as QSM — are the backbone of HUDDLE UP! Quite simply, … HUDDLE UP! doesn’t exist without their support, and we can’t thank QSM enough for what they have always done to help our efforts.”

You can see members of the QSM team at many NSU events. Be sure to look for Steven Gros, and come out to support The Colonels at the next home game … kick off is 3pm, Saturday, October 7, 2023, against Houston Christian.
