The owners of Laguna Beach Volleyball Complex had visions of building a top notch sports facility for the Baton Rouge Metro area. Their recent decision to install a Hydraway 2000 Drainage system puts them closer to realizing that dream.
In fact, installing the Hydraway Drainage system puts them on par with world class facilities such as LSU’s Softball Field, the University of Michigan’s Baseball facility, and the Triple AAA Baseball affiliate New Orleans Zephyrs.
Co-owners Tim Tonguis and Joey Keener bought Laguna Beach, in Denham Springs, La. almost three years ago. The complex is a popular spot for competitive tournament sand volleyball and recreational league play. However, the facility had drainage problems.
“Whenever we’d get a good rain,” says Tonguis, “we’d have to run out there to dig a series of trenches to facilitate drainage, and even then, our players were left playing in a sandy soup.
“We want to give our players a better facility. We want to eliminate as much standing water as possible, and make the courts playable — even after torrential downpours.”
So far, so good. Tonguis spent months researching available products and learning about traditional drain systems. During this time, one thing became clear: design, installation and construction of a traditional system was going to require a large budget. Seeking alternatives, he discovered Hydraway.
Hydraway is made of heavy-duty, clog resistant geotextile fabric. It is specifically designed to permit high rates of flow for rapid drainage, while also preventing passage or clogging of soil particles.
It is used in residential and commercial projects. But, one of its most common applications is in sports fields (baseball, softball, football, golf). It is a cost-effective replacement to traditional French drain systems or other conventional drain-tile systems.
With a flow rate 7-25 times higher than conventional methods, it allows sports fields (or stubborn residential problem areas) to drain at very high rates, with very little residual effect from soil erosion or clogging.
“The proof is in the photos,” says Tonguis. “I have before and after pictures of the Laguna Beach Complex. The difference is amazing.”
Tonguis also says, “not only is this a superior system, it ended up being less expensive for us to install.”
The project took approximately two weeks once QSM made delivery to Laguna Beach. Tonguis says he is happy with the system, and he was delighted to find a local distributor of Hydraway products in Baton Rouge.
“Volleyball is a fast growing and competitive sports in the Baton Rouge area,” says Tonguis. “Our facility — with six lighted courts — is well known. The addition of this drainage system gives our players an even better facility — one on which we can play games immediately following rains.”
