Command Construction Performs Drainage Work at Mazoue Ditch and St. Peters Ditch in Jefferson Parish

Share in:

Command Construction of Metairie currently is working on two significant drainage projects on the East Bank of Jefferson parish.  Command called on QSM to provide products for each job site. The two projects are: Mazoue Ditch and St. Peters Ditch in Harahan and in Metairie.

The first project is located in Harahan near Jefferson Highway, and it isn’t far from the Mississippi River. It’s called the Mazoue Ditch, which runs from near Seafood Ditch to near Lauricella Ditch. The work includes replacing part of Mazoue Ditch with a box culvert and installing sheet pile, and other necessary assembly such as access hatches on this portion of ditch served by the box culvert. Meyer Engineers, Ltd. provided engineering planning, design and management on this project.

The full scope of the Mazoue Ditch project was awarded in phases. Command Construction currently is working on Phase VI, at an estimated cost of $1.94 million. Work began in March and is expected to be complete by December.

QSM provided Command with concrete pipe, fabric, and specially designed, custom-built frames that will be fit to access hatches to be used by workers servicing the culvert in it’s lifespan. The custom frames were manufactured by East Jordan Iron Works.

Command is building a nearly 700 foot long concrete box culvert at the ditch to replace an aging 96″ arch drainage pipe.

Mazoue Ditch runs alongside Folse St. at the border between Harahan and River Ridge. It is part of a larger SELA project known as the Pump to the River, when combined with other ditch work and pump work in the area, this construction will improve flood control.

The Pump to the River Project is located in Harahan, but the project will benefit all of East Jefferson Parish by lessening drainage loads throughout the East Bank. It is the first project to pump drainage water into the Mississippi River.

The pump station under construction is located in the vicinity of the waste water treatment plant and Hickory Avenue. A buried suction canal will pass underneath the Harahan Playground and continue to the intersection of the Soniat Canal and the Mazoue Ditch. All components will work in conjunction to see that water is efficiently moved through the system and into the Mississippi River.

Command Construction also is working on improvements to the St. Peter’s ditch outfall at the West Metairie Avenue canal. This portion of the parish drainage system currently is covered and runs between West Metairie Ave. and Airline Drive. The covered pipe will be removed and replaced with concrete box culvert.

QSM is supplying Command with fabric and grid on the St. Peter’s Ditch project.

This project also is being completed in phases. Phase 3C is currently underway at an estimated cost of $4 million.
