APC Construction recently installed ACO’s MiniKlassik trench drain system on a one-of-a-kind bridge design at the New Orleans Museum of Art’s Sydney and Walda Bestoff Sculpture Garden.
QSM supplied this solution to APC because design plans called for a high-profile, aesthetic trench drain where a barrier is required to separate wet and dry areas on a Moses Bridge — the first of its kind ever built in the United States.
APC Construction took on the challenge as a sub-contractor to Palmisano at the expansion of NOMA’s Sydney & Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden.
A Moses bridge — so called because it creates an experience of walking through water — was designed to provide a connection between the current garden and the garden expansion. Seventy feet in length, the bridge responds to New Orleans City Park’s request to not interrupt traffic flow through Roosevelt Mall.
APC built this innovative bridge, and installed ACO’s MiniKlassik trench drain as part of the project.
When complete, as the lagoons in the sculpture garden are refilled, the Moses Bridge will see water rise to just beneath the top edges as visitors traverse an area right at the water’s level.
“Bridge construction isn’t new to us at APC,” says Jaret Ferina, project manager, “but, this was something new for everyone involved. The designers conceived this to be a sculpture, within the sculpture garden — that’s really what this is — and the end result stands up as a center piece connecting the two sections of the garden in a very cool way.”
Project Superintendent Jack Morphet is proud of APC Construction for taking on this challenge. “The designers had a vision of something unique and eye catching, APC Construction is pleased to be a part of such a memorable project that will be a focal point of the park for many years to come.”
APC Construction, founded in 2006, is a licensed general contractor. Specializing in complex structural concrete, earth work, deep foundations, heavy industrial, and marine construction … APC works on large-scale projects across South Louisiana.
QSM carries a wide range of trench drain systems for a wide variety of applications. Systems such as ACO’s MiniKlassik are ideal for use wherever foot traffic is frequent, and where wet and dry areas meet. Not only useful on innovative projects such as this one, ACO’s MiniKlassik is also a good fit for pools, around ponds, and in backyard patios.
