MRT Construction Installs StormTech in New Orleans

Share in:

StormTech Detention Systems are designed to alleviate water runoff, and mitigate flooding in urban areas. StormTech also is useful where space is at a premium.

StormTech chambers can be used for commercial, municipal, industrial, recreational and residential applications, and one of the key advantages of the StormTech chamber system is its design flexibility.

That’s why MRT Construction, of New Orleans, called QSM when it needed a detention system for a project on Elysian Fields Ave. StormTech was the perfect fit for the confined commercial property.

A StormTech SC160 detention system was installed on a unique piece of property at Elysian Fields Ave., on a triangular lot where Claiborne Ave.and North Robertson intersect.

The space is tight, and drainage demands in the area are strictly enforced due to increased risks of flooding in recent years. MRT Construction selected StormTech to make optimal use of the ground beneath the Smoothie King building, and the small drive through lane  / parking lot.

And now … this lot retains stormwater so that it slowly trickles back into the city drainage system, rather than run off immediately as it hits concrete.

How StormTech Works

StormTech chambers may be configured into beds or trenches of various sizes or shapes. They can be centralized or decentralized, and fit on nearly all sites. Chamber lengths enhance the ability to develop on both existing and pre-developed projects.

The systems can be designed easily and efficiently around utilities, natural or man-made structures and any other limiting boundaries.

The SC160 is ideal for shallow cover applications — only 14″ (350mm) is required from top of chamber to bottom of pavement and only 12″ (300mm) tall. Installs toe to toe – with no additional spacing required between rows.

StormTech is manufactured by ADS, and is represented by QSM.

The Bridge Between Green & Gray Infrastructure

StormTech Detention systems are an innovative bridge between what’s commonly known as Green Infrastructure, and the more widely used, Gray Infrastructure.

Green Infrastructure (GI) is a complementary, alternative system to conventional (or “Gray”) stormwater solutions that mimic natural hydrology. It seeks to improve water quality and reduce water quantity by capturing runoff as close to the source as possible (i.e. where the raindrop falls) and infiltrating, filtering, detaining, or otherwise storing the runoff for reuse.

Green infrastructure benefits include

  1. Environmental
  2. Health
  3. Energy Savings
  4. Economic Development
  5. Resiliency

When used together, StormTech chambers and green infrastructure offer the most cost-effective method to save valuable land and protect water resources. Together they allow for a design that both treats a required water quality volume, while also providing attenuation for peak flow volumes.
