Performing complicated construction projects at the Port of New Orleans is no light task, but KASS Bros., of Westwego, LA, welcomed the challenge on France Road in East New Orleans.
Specialists in sitework preparation, underground utilities and concrete paving, KASS Bros. worked with the Port’s Construction Services Division to completely overhaul drainage improvements at Pump Station #6 at the Drainage Basin on the Port’s sprawling East New Orleans property.
“This job had several parts to it. We laid a long run of large drainage pipe, a shorter run of pipe, relocated some existing pipe and manhole covers, and had to go under a road bed, but also had to minimize the downtime on that roadway so commercial traffic would continue to flow,” said Howell Williams, Construction Division Manager at KASS.
In addition to site prep, the Port hired KASS to install 600 linear feet of 54-inch arch pipe (asphalt coated, corrugated metal pipe, in adjacent 300-foot runs), 42-inch arch pipe (CMP), slope paving, concrete pipe and manhole covers.
The 54-inch pipe ran in tandem to the canal basin on the back side of France Rd. The 42-inch pipe was installed under the road bed. Slope paving was used on the railroad side of a ditch, and also on the canal side — with 400-square yards being installed where the 54-inch pipe empties into the canal.
“We’ve worked with QSM for many years,” says Williams. “Come to think of it, we’ve had a relationship with them since they were called F&G Services. You won’t find a better company to work with. They’re excellent at customer service. They know and represent their products very well. I’m always pleased when we know we’ll be able to use QSM on a job.”
KASS Bros. has been in business for more than 65 years. The company performs site preparation work, concrete paving, underground utility work, demolition and excavation for private and public entities, as well as providing sand and dump truck services to many larger contractors in Metro New Orleans.
KASS, a majority woman-owned, and certified DBE, is licensed in the state of Louisiana to perform building construction, heavy construction, highway, street and bridge construction, municipal and public works construction.
QSM is a supplier of drainage, paving and sewer products for the civil construction industry. It serves a large customer based from three locations in Louisiana.
