The Port of New Orleans awarded a $13 million contract to Metairie-based Hard Rock Construction for improvements to the Mississippi River Intermodal Terminal at Napoleon Ave. The 12-acre project will enhance the terminal, and improve the movement of intermodal cargo while also reducing the Port’s carbon footprint.
The project is part of what’s known as a TIGER grant (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant) that was awarded to the Port of New Orleans, through the U.S. Department of Transportation. The total cost of the project, with the addition of new terminal equipment and engineering services, is estimated at $21 million. The project should be complete by February 2016.
Hard Rock is the GC on the project. Scope includes site prep, drainage and utility work, electrical, installation of new water feeds and hydrants, paved lay down areas for containers, and installation of up to 10,000 linear feet of intermodal rail spurs. They’re installing precast drainage structures now.
Hard Rock is managing the entire project. What’s most impressive about the operation is that intermodal service at the Napoleon Ave. Container Terminal will not be interrupted during construction. Existing rail lines will be removed upon installation of the new tracks.
Hard Rock ordered all castings, drainage pipe and precast drainage structures from QSM.
Engineering and project management services were awarded to AECOM. Electrical contracting is being done by Walter J. Barnes Electrical Co., Inc.
Earlier this year, the Port used a federal grant to build an adjacent four-acre container marshalling yard at the Louisiana Avenue Terminal. Combined, these investments are expected to create 100 permanent marine and cargo handling jobs in New Orleans.
