When QSM’s Steven Gros, saw an engineering spec sheet on a commercial project, in Opelousas, he saw a value engineering opportunity and immediately thought of StormTech® drainage. He called Rene Daigle at ADS to talk about proposing a StormTech system for use at a suburban shopping center.

ADS produced a design that met the requirements and also reduced the storage footprint, and QSM supplied one of the first StormTech systems in southwest Louisiana.QSM believes StormTech is one of the most cost effective alternatives to above ground ponds for detention, retention and infiltration application, and we’ve recommended StormTech on many projects in New Orleans’ dense urban area — where water retention is not only an important issue, but is also part of city code.

More recently, we’ve taken calls from engineers and property owners who ask about the value of using sub-surface detention systems in suburban areas with more space.

To date, each one of these has been a big success because making use of StormTech takes land that would have been dedicated to an unsightly pond, and turns it into usable space.

StormTech is designed to be used under parking lots, roadways and heavy earth loads for commercial and turf applications. In short: StormTech saves land and protects water resources.”

The Chase Group was general contractor on this project, and May’s Construction & Plumbing Services, LLC provided site work and the StormTech installation.

QSM supplied 440 linear feet of 15-inch HP storm pipe, five 18-inch Nyoplast catch basins, two Nyoplast catch basins, a StormTech SC-310 Chamber system, and all road and highway grates on this project.

Tyler May, owner of May’s Construction, said: “This was our first time working with the StormTech product, and it was very easy to install. Everything went smoothly in working with QSM. In fact, I’m talking with another customer already about using StormTech on an upcoming project.”

The prime goal for the developer of the property were to provide maximum control of stormwater runoff at the site. Initially, engineers looked at a various options for stormwater detention, and that’s when QSM proposed StormTech as a viable alternative.

The stormwater management installed here was designed to handle 1,312cfs of water, on a footprint that actually takes less room than other systems or ponds.

StormTech chambers are designed in accordance with AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design and ASTM specifications. Meeting these standards assures the chambers provide load safety factors and structural integrity.

StormTech is manufactured using polypropylene; the chambers are rated by ADS for a 75-year service life.

The SC-310 Chamber System comes in a size (L x W x H) of 85.4” x 34” x 16”, giving 14.7 ft3  of chamber storage, with a minimum installed storage of 31.0 ft3. Each piece weighs 37 lbs, it is easy to handle, and requires minimal laydown and storage since all units are stackable.

The systems are installed with angular crushed stone above, below, and between chambers — and it’s stone porosity which adds to total installed storage.
