When it comes to building sand volleyball courts, there is a lot more to the process than just putting down good sand. It all starts with proper drainage design, base materials and sand containment.

And that’s why architects, designers and contractors call on QSM.

QSM provides innovative and cost effective drainage solutions to a wide variety of sports-related projects, and there are more than a half dozen sand volleyball complexes around the Metro New Orleans area where QSM has supplied drainage materials.

The new complex at the University of New Orleans is no exception.

QSM supplied Hydraway® on this project.

A Hydraway system is easier to install and features the industry’s highest in-flow rate and compressive strength, and has a history of dependable performance.

It is used to great effect when installed on athletic field drainage projects, residential waterproofing projects, landscaping drainage, and even general civil construction projects.

Hydraway comes in widths of 6 and 12 inches with a standard length of 150 feet. It can be customized in a variety of lengths and widths on request.

For this project, QSM supplied Hydraway strip drain in 75-foot lengths.

TEH Enterprises, LLC — the contractor on this job — installed Hydraway atop woven fabric in twelve rows of 75-foot runs.

Hydraway strip drain connects to PVC pipe underneath the sand to complete the drainage solution, which swiftly dispenses water from the courts to keep them playable — even in inclement weather.

Hydraway is a geocomposite subsurface drainage solution that’s composed of a structured high-density polyethylene (HDPE) perforated core that is thermally bonded to a geotextile filter fabric. The geotextile allows water to pass through while retaining backfill materials.

The perforated core allows water collection from all sides and provides a continuous flow path.

Hydraway provides a value engineered solution to the conventional perforated pipe and aggregate subsurface drainage systems. This solution is more durable as it prevents clogs, fungal growth, and disintegration.

UNO’s new sand volleyball complex is home to the UNO Privateers women’s volleyball team. UNO competes in Division 1 NCAA athletics, and the facility will be capable of playing host to NCAA games and tournaments throughout each season.

This project was designed by Holly & Smith Architects.

Holly & Smith works on commercial projects across Louisiana, and the southern United States. Batture engineers and land surveyors served as the civil engineer on the project.

So, … for volleyball court drainage? Think Hydraway. Athletic field drainage? Think Hydraway. Sports and landscape drainage in Louisiana? Think Hydraway and QSM.
